A beautifully proportioned antique mirror, characterised by its richly toned mahogany frame, bevelled glass and intricate hand-carved detailing.
The elongated rectangular form is softened by clipped corners, while carved scrollwork at each corner lends the piece a decorative, almost architectural quality. A fine beaded border runs around the mirror plate, adding depth and definition without overwhelming the restrained proportions of the frame.
The dark mahogany has developed a warm, varied patina over time, with subtle signs of age giving the piece a particularly attractive character. The bevelled mirror plate further enhances the sense of depth and craftsmanship. Carved mahogany frames and bevelled plates are characteristic features found on Victorian and late-19th-century mirrors, although I would avoid assigning an exact date to this example without further provenance or inspection of its construction.
Equally suited to being hung vertically or styled leaning against a wall, its narrow proportions make it an easy piece to place in a hallway, bedroom or dressing area. The contrast between the ornate carving and simple silhouette allows it to sit comfortably alongside both antique and contemporary furniture.
