Maralunga Sofa in Pistachio Leather by Vico Magistretti for Cassina

An icon of 1970s Italian design, the Maralunga sofa was designed by Vico Magistretti for Cassina in 1973. Celebrated for its combination of generous comfort and understated innovation, the design was awarded the prestigious Compasso d’Oro in 1979.

This two-seat example is presented in its fully original condition, upholstered in a beautifully soft pistachio-toned leather. The subtle colour complements the Maralunga’s relaxed, sculptural form, with deep seat cushions, softly rounded arms and generously padded backrests creating its distinctive enveloping silhouette.

At the heart of the design is Magistretti’s ingenious adjustable backrest. Concealed mechanisms allow the headrests to be individually raised or lowered, transforming the sofa from a low, informal profile into a more supportive high-backed seating position. This deceptively simple innovation became one of the defining characteristics of the Maralunga.

More than fifty years after its introduction, the Maralunga remains one of Cassina’s most recognisable designs. This example is particularly appealing for its originality, retaining the character, softness and natural patina developed through decades of use.

Condition
Very good vintage condition. The original pistachio leather has been carefully preserved and displays a beautiful natural patina, with gentle creasing and age-related wear consistent with use.
